Bringing Morality Back to the White House: How Trump is Bolstering the Pro-Life Movement

Trump pro-life White HouseIs Donald Trump the most pro-life leader our nation has had? This is the question many Americans on both sides of the aisle are asking, as the 45th president has proven to be a fierce defender of the unborn. Trump has shown a consistent concern for the rights of America’s unborn children, making it loud and clear that he intends to fight abortion during his time in the White House. And for President Trump, this isn’t just empty rhetoric—it’s become concrete policy.

One of Trump’s first presidential acts after taking office was to reinstate the Mexico City Policy, a piece of legislation that blocks federal funding for non-governmental organizations (NGO’s) that provide abortion services and abortion referrals. Originally introduced by President Reagan in 1984, the policy has been renamed by the Trump administration, now known as “Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance”. Under the current scope of the policy, foreign NGO’s are required to confirm that they will not “perform or actively promote abortion as a method of family planning”. By effectively ending abortion funding abroad, Trump as shown that his pro-life stance extends beyond the United States alone.

President Trump’s cabinet is also comprised of pro-life figures. Vice President Pence, in particular, spent much of the 2016 campaign proudly espousing his pro-life views. A vocal opponent of Roe v. Wade, Pence has spoken on how the ruling is cruel and based on falsifications, and how abortion is antithetical to his Christian faith. At the 2017 March for Life, Pence delivered a moving speech on abortion in America, telling the crowd, “Life is winning in America”. He added, “I have long believed that a society can be judged by how we care for our most vulnerable – the aged, the infirm, the disabled, and the unborn. […] We will continue to win the hearts and minds of the rising generation if our hearts first break for young mothers and their unborn children.”

In addition to appointing a cabinet of pro-life advocates, President Trump has worked tirelessly to advance anti-abortion legislation. In April, the president signed a bill that allows states to deny federal money to organizations that provide abortion services, such as Planned Parenthood. Likewise, Trump’s proposed fiscal budget for 2018 is the first to explicitly mention Planned Parenthood and actively prevent the organization from participating in any program funded by Congress’ Labor HHS bill—a huge advancement in blocking abortion services in the United States.

In October, the House passed Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which was strongly backed by the Trump administration. The bill bans abortions after 20 weeks, except in the case of the mother’s life being in danger or the pregnancy being a result of rape or incest. A violator of the new legislation is subject to criminal penalties—a fine, up to five years in prison, or both.

Donald Trump has indicated before that his stance on abortion is tied to his faith. As he famously stated in his speech at the 2017 Values Voter Summit, “We don’t worship government, we worship God”. The president’s proclamation of faith reflects his moral values and his reason for believing all life is sacred. Not to mention, President Trump’s brand of moral leadership is something the United States desperately needs after eight years of Barack Obama’s war on Christianity and traditional values.

It’s clear at this point that our president doesn’t just talk, he takes action. Trump has delivered on his pro-life promises and in the process, has ushered in a new era of ethics and values in America. By consistently defending the rights of the unborn, Donald Trump is not only making America great again—he is making morality “in” again.

I am sooo very proud of Pres Trump and what he has accomplished in his first year of office, in spite of Democrats blocking all of his attempts to fulfill his campaign promises. I am proud now, to be an American, with Donald Trump as President.

No, he is “pro-birth” and doesn’t care about children after they are born. If he did, he would speak out about the GOP’s negligence in funding CHIP (which has historically had bipartisan support). He also wouldn’t support a tax bill that takes away health insurance form the most vulnerable. Trump hides behind the “pro-life” label because he knows a large number of Americans will vote on a single issue (abortion) and ignore the other ways he is harming society. The greatest trick the devil has played in modern American is convincing evangelicals that the GOP is pro-life and now we… Read more »
