Trump Authorizes Federal Government to Arrest Anyone Who Vandalizes, Destroys Statues

trumpPresident Donald Trump on Tuesday said he’s authorized the federal government to arrest any person who vandalizes or destroys a monument or other federal property.

The wrongdoers will face up to 10 years in prison, Trump said in a social media statement.

“This action is taken effective immediately, but may also be used retroactively for destruction or vandalism already caused. There will be no exceptions!” the president said.

Prosecutors can use the Veteran’s Memorial Preservation Act or other pertinent laws. The act, passed in 2003, says that people who willfully try or successfully injure or destroy any structure, plaque, statue, or other monument on public property commemorating service in the armed forces of the United States shall be fined, imprisoned up to 10 years, or both.

Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt late Monday condemned anarchists and others behind the violence seen in cities across the nation, calling the people who tried toppling a statue of Andrew Jackson near the White House criminals.

The Lincoln and World War II memorials were previously defaced, he said.

“Across the country, some elected leaders of our cities have expressed enthusiasm and support for these criminals, exhibiting an undeniable unwillingness to protect law abiding citizens and their property,” he said on Twitter.

“We live in the greatest country in the world, and I thank our dedicated law enforcement officials who stand tall against these coordinated attacks and seek peace and justice for all.”

Executive Order

Trump’s announcement came hours after he said he was planning to issue an executive order that would force cities to guard statues and other monuments.

“It’s a disgrace. Remember, some of this is great artwork. This is magnificent artwork, as good as there is anywhere in the world, as good as you see in France, as good as you see anywhere. It’s a disgrace. Most of these people don’t even know what they’re taking down,” Trump said.

I would hope that any individual convicted of such vandalism or destruction gets the full 10-year sentence and serves time in Club Fed. Also, each of these miscreants needs to be made to pay the full cost of restoration occasioned by their misdeeds. The combination of jail time plus taking their money will serve the nation well to prevent this sort of behavior from continuing.

These criminals must absolutely be captured and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. We loose our History when we loose our Culture. We are doomed to repeat mistakes when we do not learn from them. As an Art Teacher the destruction of our monuments is killing my soul.

It’s about time! You can’t change history by ignoring it.
There is a lot of similarity between the trends in this counntry and that of the roman empire.

It is about time and I applaud President Trump for protecting this country, our history and decent people against violent leftist anarchists. BLM leaders have publicly stated they follow Marxist ideology and Antifa is a domestic terrorist group. BUT, lefty prosecutors who are Trump haters will do nothing and police will be ordered not to arrest! I have had more than enough of the Marxist anarchy and hatred permeating this country with much of it accepted/encouraged by people elected to be leaders who are actually ignorant cowards. It is an absolute disgrace and the left will leave nothing undone to… Read more »

Well…FIRST, you’ll have to enforce the law which appears to have been in place since 2003. And it takes action by the President to alert law enforcement to this? We’re two degrees below anarchy.

I thoroughly agree that the law should stand their ground on destruction of statutes and other monuments that are standing proud. All lives matter no matter the race. God see’s no color, so why should we? I am not the judge, God is and I will be judged according to my works here on earth and I feel those that deface the monuments should be fined and jailed. They have been there for years and were honored, so leave them alone. #1. Remove PELOSI! #2. I personally know some Police Officers badges and uniform goes to their head. When caught… Read more »

The statues create questions and are historical. It’s a bad thing to take them down

Hooray! I’m sick and tired, and hopping MAD about the descruction of these memorials. You can’t change HISTORY but removing it. Plus, many of the those memorials have been vandalized have nothing to do with racism, and those (like Whittier in CA) that were defaced were of men who were anti-slavery.

Maybe the anarchists should spend ten years of prison with ten years of history lessons included for free. Vandalism and wonton destruction of any property is and should be punishable by imprisonment. These no-nothings did not pay for these items, and they have no right at all to destroy property that does not belong to them. It is pretty clear that they need stiff punishment.

Thank God our president has taken the steps to stop this destructive behavior. These people are out and out criminals. This is our history that they are destroying. These people have gone crazy. The Democrats have gone crazy. They are not listening to the country but are doing everything in their power to feed themselves. We as a great nation have got to stop them.

As should be the case. Revisionists want to change history by destroying history. We spend far too much time focusing on our differences Folks we are all in this game of life together. sink or swim we have to get through this together.

If you don’t like something from our past speak out about it- don’t destroy it.

My comment is simple. Thank you, Mr. President for protecting our heritage, our history; that which we are proud of, and that of which we are ashamed. All of it contributes to who we are.

I say they should do 1+ years 15 hours to repair memorials damaged & I urge these for new statues:
Gene Roddenberry, Jules Verne, Adm Rickover, Adm Nimitz, Gen Patton, Ike, Mercury 7 crew, Nikolas Tesla, Edison, Musk, Harriet Tubman, Carl Sagen, for the US, New blood & ideas.

No doubt, this is vandalism of government or private property and should NOT be tolerated. Fines are in order.

When will protestors start taking statues out of churches? Pelosi wants statues removed from Capitol. Can she be prosecuted under this executive order?
